Ruingurth meant "Fire-death," an appropriate name for this ugly but dangerous reddish-brown Dragon. He was the oldest and slowest of Wilderland's Great Worms, but his fire- breath rivalled that of his strongest kin. The son of Ancalagon, he fought in the War of Wrath, where he was wounded by a Great Eagle. Virtually in perpetual sleep, Ruingurth was uncaringly fatalistic. He would not stir unless struck. His home was in Goat Mountain, a silver-laden peak located along the southern rim of the Withered Heath.

Notes

The ICE Canon made Ruingurth a child of Ancalagon, brother to Smaug and Utumkodur, and one of the few Dragons that actually survived the War of Wrath. This seems unlikely as when smaug invaded Erebor in 2770 he was still considered a relatively young drake. As Glaurung needed about 200 years to grow to full strength after his first appearance it seems unlikely that Smaug was actually much more than four hundred years old. Also Tolkien stated that only two dragons (seemingly one Cold Drake and one Fire Drake) had survived the war of Wrath and became the ancestors of all later Dragons. More likely Ruingurth and his brother and sister (Smaug and Utumkodur) were grand- or even great-grandchildren of Ancalagon, or even more likely - if Ruingurth was one of the two surviving drakes of the War of Wrath- Smaug was descendant of Ruingurth rather than his younger brother. For the purposes of the timeline and canon of this wiki and Tolkien's work, Utumkodur is considered to be the dragon female that survived the War of Wrath, thus making Ruingurth and Smaug descendants of her rather than her siblings.
