Corsairs

Corsairs

A Corsair originally was a mariner who went on a Corso or foray. The term later came to identify a professional sea-raider who was in the service of a Realm or Lord, especially a privateer who had received a Letter of marque, a government license which authorized him to attack and capture enemy vessels although in common language the term could also be used to name any simple pirate, buccaneer or sea-wolf.

While Umbarean Sea-Raiders were referred to as Corsairs, Gondorian Privateers were known as Theryn Aer or Sea-Eagles.
