Minas Tirith Overview

Minas Tirith Details

The city and fortress of Minas Tirith was among the great municipalities of the Third Age. Named first Minas Anor and founded in the Kingdom of Gondor by its dual monarch Anárion Elendilion, it was built upon the foundations of fortresses which had existed since the first Númenórean colonization of the lower Anduin, constructed to serve as defensive fortifications against the Daen tribesmen to the west. Rebuilt into a great and well-designed citadel by the Sons of Elendil, it was the seat of his son and co-monarch Anárion as well as the chief population center in Anórien. So it remained through the War of the Last Alliance, and while Osgiliath on the Anduin remained the realm's capital and Minas Ithil its cultural center, Minas Anor stood as the center of the Kingdom's population. It was a great city, built in fortified tiers against a great, lonely foothill of the Ered Nimrais; legend said that it was designed after the ancient Armenelos, and so it was crowned with a royal Citadel and a tower fortified for the Kings of Gondor. Together with its neighbor cities, the Citadel of the Stars and the Tower of the Moon, the Tower of the Sun formed the tripartite core of Gondor - the mightiest realm and empire in Middle-earth in the Third Age.

Minas Anor in T.A. 1640[]

Minas Anor is situated on a great spur of rock at the eastern tip of the White Mountains.Great white walls define seven concentric levels of habitation ,each higher in altitude and status than the one beneath it .The city provides a formidable defense, and within the walls,a thriving cosmopolitan life has grown .King Tarondor moved his throne here after the Plague wiped out half of the population of Osgiliath .Traders and craftsmen from as far away as Rhovanion and Umbar head for the City of the Sun to do business with their fellows and to gather news from far away. The citizens of Mins Tirith are known throughout Gondor as apractical bunch ,and their industry has earned for them a role as the strongest bastion of the Free Peoples against the Shadow .Sadly, though ,not all can share in the city' s prosperity. The Plague forced a large portion of the rural population to seek sanctuary at the larger urban centers, such as Minas Anor. When the disease departed, the refugees remained encamped around the city walls, since many of their former towns no longer exist.Despite a large number of vacant dwellings, the citydwellers do nor want to open their gates indiscriminately .They fear the effect an influx of cheap labor would have on their prosperity.
