Dale and Erebor

The City of Dale (in an earlier stage before its destruction ca. 2770 TA)

Ruins of Dale

The town of Dale (Del. "Dalur", "Valley"; originally old Rh."Dala") was as much a frontier clan homestead as it was an urban settlement. Perched between two spurs of the Lonely MountainRavenhill to the west and Steinholl to the east — Dale stood on the western bank of a bend in the swift River Running. It lay just below the point where the waterway spilled from a crack in the southern face Erebor. The river quickly widened, for it was fed by a large number of subterranean brooks and carried a great volume of mountain runoff. Other streams joined the flow above the town and, as a consequence, the river was remarkably wide by the time it reached Dale's small, stone-lined harbor. The settlement's riverside wharf provided landing for trading vessels from Esgaroth. Most buildings were made of stone and either thatched or, like the administrative Krakathingashús, equipped with slate shingles. One- or two-storied structures with roomy lofts and steep roofs and at least one chimney were the norm. Windows were few and generally shuttered and set with translucent disc-shaped panes of glass, which let in only diffuse light. As a result, they were thrown open with the first hint of pleasant weather. Doors typically had both a drop-latch mechanism and a night-time drawbar. Dale's craftsmen lived in the back rooms or on the second floor of their workshops. Like other townsfolk, they kept a small vegetable and/or herb garden in their yard. Most own several animals, which they housed in a stallur (No. “Stable") behind their dwelling. The majority of homesites also included corralled family enclosures with either a withy fence or a stouter palisade wall. In fact, a number farmed small fields within the town rampart.

Dala in TA 1640[]

Dale

The City of Dala (in an earlier stage of settlement probably ca. 1640 TA)

The entire Dala (Old Rh. "Valley") community numbered less than two hundred. It was presided over by the Kreitathiuda Thegna, Aivadiuria, and — some spiteful rumors said — his shrewish wife, Sauilwinna. Part of the town served as the Felthu of the noble Kreitathiuda clan. Their Adan ancestors originally had inhabited a settlement on the same site for millennia before the Northmen arrived, long prior to the formal establishment of the Third Age town. After the arrival of the Dwarves of Durin (T.A. I999), the urbanization of Dala accelerated. Felthus for the other four Dale-folk clans and many lesser family farms were depopulated or deserted as more people took up artisan trades and relocated to Dale. The town's population swelled steadily. The monthly market, held a week after Lake-town's, possessed significant regional importance. After Smaug the Golden arrived and took up residence in the Lonely Mountain, Dale and Erebor were abandoned. The Dale-folk fled south to Esgaroth. Their exile lasted for 171 years (T.A. 2770-294I). Then, the leveled town was rebuilt and reinhabited by Bard Bowman and his followers after the warrior slew Smaug. His people later came to be known as Bardings.

Notes[]

"Dale" at last had two historic stages. The original Dale was most likely built after 2590 when King Thrór re-established the Kingdom under the Mountain and it was destroyed by Smaug in TA 2770, having existed for probably c. 180 years. After the death of Smaug in TA 2941 it was rebuilt and probably continued well into the Fourth Age. In MERP we are introduced to a hypothetical even older version of Dale which already existen about TA 1640 and it is suggested that even before there had been settlements reaching as far back as the second Age. There is some reason to rationalize such earlier settlements due to the presence of the Longbeards at Erebor at least since the Second Age and the establishment of Vidugavia's kingdom in the 13th century TA.
