Arthorontur (S. "High-eagle-lord"), a kin of Gwaihir, was Lord of the Great Eagles of the Ered Luin.

Detailed Description[]

Ruling the Kelvar of the western peaks of the Blue Mountains with benevolent authority, Arthorontur was a distant cousin to Gwaihir, Windlord of the Misty Mountains. Truly an impressive sight, Arthorontur was one of the largest Eagles remaining in Middle-earth; his mighty wingspan spread to 50 feet. Although remaining aloof from the affairs of the peoples of Lindon and Dúneriador, the Lord of the Ered Luin was well-known as the source for many a legend. Arthorontur's eagles had occasionally interfered in the conflicts during the Second and Third Ages, becoming involved in pushing back the forces of the Dark Lord in S.A. 1700.

Although his demeanor was haughty and arrogant, Arthorontur was a kind spirit. He and his kindred had been known to rescue hapless wanderers lost in the dangerous wilds of Dúneriador, setting them down in safety near a town or village. The Eagles of the Ered Luin were stuff of legends. Although rarely seen, they possessed the respect of the educated folk of Lindon and Dúneriador.
